WASHINGTON, DC (September 21, 2010) — The Hitachi Foundation today announced the addition of Four-Star Admiral Bruce DeMars, retired, U.S. Navy, to its Board of Directors.
Admiral DeMars joins a Foundation at the vanguard of efforts to understand and help facilitate the powerful role that employers play in creating opportunities for low-income workers while, at the same time helping the bottom line.
"Linking the bottom-line of business to the success of low-income workers is a crucial goal, and a very difficult one," Admiral DeMars said. "Helping make that happen requires an intensely focused and well-run organization, which describes The Hitachi Foundation. Having spent my entire professional life in the navy, primarily in submarines and nuclear power, that's the kind of organization in which I thrive, and I believe I can make a real contribution to the Foundation's mission."
Admiral DeMars served as the Director of Naval Nuclear Propulsion, leading the transition of 176 nuclear reactors on ships and submarines, plus nuclear facilities at shipyards, laboratories, and commercial suppliers, to the post-cold war period. He served as the Chief of Naval Operations principal assistant for submarine matters from 1983 to 1988. Prior to this he was the Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Marianas and the Commander in Chief Pacific Representative for Guam and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. During his early career, he participated in cold war submarine special operations in all theaters.
Upon retiring from the U.S. Navy in 1996, both Houses of Congress passed resolutions honoring the Admiral for his work on behalf of the country. In 2009, he was presented the U.S. Naval Academy Distinguished Graduate Award.
Admiral DeMars currently serves on the Board of the Exelon Corporation and OceanWorks International. He is a Member Emeritus of the Corporation of the Draper Laboratory and Chairman of the Naval Historical Foundation.
